Asset Building

Charleston Trident Urban League’s Center for Asset Building is designed to provide the financial education tools necessary to improve the economic stability of families in an effort to help them meet their basic needs and become upwardly mobile with the intent of gradually increasing their wealth. The program performs under a “Your Money, You Earned It, Now Grow It” platform. Program benefits include tax preparation, tax credits and financial literacy.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

The VITA Program

The Charleston Trident Urban League, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, provides a free income tax preparation service for the low-to-moderate income folks of our tri-county area. This service, known as VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) involves recruiting and training 80 or more volunteers to staff 16 VITA tax sites around the tri-county area.

We expect to prepare about 3200 tax returns during this year’s tax season. 95% of our tax clients usually receive a refund. We e-file all returns and it is interesting to me that every year, our clients have learned to bring their check book, or a voided check, so they can have their refund direct deposited into their bank account and have that refund within 10 days to two weeks, compared to 3 to weeks for a mailed check.

This is a very rewarding work! When can we tell a single Mom with 3 dependent children she is eligible for a $6000 tax refund and watch a big smile spread on her face you know you have provide a free worthwhile service! Based on past VITA tax year end results I estimate the total refund amount for this tax season to be between $1,700,000 and $1,800,000.

We need volunteers to serve with us during the upcoming income tax filing season! To volunteer please contact Jack Bennett
