The Charleston Area Urban League promotes diversity and racial inclusion — providing programs that help African Americans and underserved communities across the South Carolina Lowcountry achieve social equality and economic self-sufficiency.

WHO WE ARE

What the Charleston Area Urban League Does

The Charleston Area Urban League implements its mission through advocacy, direct services, and referrals on behalf of clients — working alongside an extensive network of social service agencies and organizations throughout the Charleston tri-county area.

We serve African Americans and all other underserved groups in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties, connecting individuals and families with the resources, opportunities, and support they need to achieve lasting social and economic equality.

The organization also assumes a community advocacy role — addressing essential elements of civic life in Charleston including promoting understanding, racial harmony, and equitable access to opportunity for all residents of the greater Charleston area.

OUR HISTORY

More Than Three Decades Serving Charleston

Since its inception in 1991, the Charleston Area Urban League has established positive and longstanding partnerships with local and national corporations, as well as state and local governments, to solve complex social and economic problems facing the Charleston community.

Over more than three decades, CAUL has created and implemented programs to improve the socioeconomic conditions of minority and low-income individuals throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry. Through unique programming combined with public policy advocacy, the Charleston Area Urban League has assisted thousands of individuals and families in the greater Charleston, SC area.

What began as a local affiliate of the National Urban League has grown into one of the most established civil rights and social services organizations in the Charleston region — a trusted partner to the community, to local government, and to the businesses and institutions that make up the fabric of Lowcountry life.
